Freddy C. Domínguez

Freddy C. Domínguez Freddy C. Domínguez Freddy C. Domínguez

I am currently serving as book review editor for the Sixteenth Century Journal. Dr. Deborah Forteza and Dr. Lora Walsh serve as associate editors.

The journal publishes around 200 reviews a year of books pertaining broadly to the late medieval and early modern periods — roughly the 13th through the 18th centuries. We are eager to review more books concerning topics outside of Europe and published outside of Europe and North America.

For Reviewers

  • Reviews should be between 1000 and 1400 words, although there is room for negotiation on a case by case basis.
  • Ideally, authors will place the book under review within the context of previous scholarship, give the reader a sense of the book’s arguments and how those are constructed, and provide a critique of the work in question. We encourage rigorous engagement with books under review and an honest assessment of those books. However, we expect that the tone will remain professional and constructive.
  • In general, I will contact potential reviewers, but will be happy to hear from anyone interested in writing a review.  We welcome reviews by advanced graduate students and all qualified reviewers at any career stage.

In writing reviews, please follow these basic guidelines:

  1. Follow the format used in the Journal: Title, Author. Place of Publication: Publisher. Year. Number of pages. Price. ISBN.
  2. Directly under the bibliographic information, skip a line and place your own name and institutional affiliation.
  3. Please meet the deadline for your review. If you cannot meet it, notify the book review editor at scjbooks@uark.edu.
  4. The Journal uses Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition and Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition for writing and spelling standards.
  5. Please DO NOT use footnotes.
  6. Please submit your review electronically via e-mail at scjbooks@uark.edu.
  7. Your review will be copy edited.
  8. If you decide against reviewing a book, please return it to the BRO as soon as possible. The failure to do so will rob an author and colleague of their chance for peer review.

Copyright for all book reviews published in Sixteenth Century Journal is assigned by the reviewer to the Journal.  By submission of your review, you, the reviewer, understand the Sixteenth Century Journal and its agents will create and electronically distribute copies of your review, including, but not limited to, yourself and the book publisher.

Once a review has been submitted, the editor and associate editors will edit the text for clarity.  We will reach out to you should there be more substantial questions.  We will be happy to send you a proof, should you request one.
